這就是“Lady Dior As Seen By”的展覽場地。

Looking out of the IFC, for a peep of sea view, one can see an odd object lying on the roof of pier number 4. Yes, on top of a pier, there sits a gigantic Lady Dior bag, with glowing LED cannage pattern at night. This is the ‘Lady As Seen By’ exhibition. It has travelled around the world. Sao Paulo, Milan, Shanghai, to name but a few. Now that it’s in Hong Kong, there’s no excuse to miss it. It’s free!

Lady Dior袋子、袋子上的lucky charms和紮實的手柄結構都非常吸引目光兩個衣著醒目的男生替我開了那刷白的門,用英文歡迎來賓“Welcome to Lady Dior As Seen By”。

Up three flights of stairs, and the huge bag comes into sight. The Lady Dior, ‘lucky charms’, and the sturdy bag handles make for interesting stuctural talking points. Two smartly dressed gentlemen open the white-washed doors for me with a, “Welcome to Lady Dior As Seen By”, and I’m in! The chilly interior holds around a hundred art pieces, by various leading artists around the world, all based on the Lady Dior Bag. Not much info was provided alongside each piece, but luckily the narrator ladies in attendance helped me out.

Gregor Hildebrandt, a German artist, has chosen to use VHS and cassette tape to mask the bag. It turns out he used Hitchcock’s Vertigo to make the front and the back. The remaining parts of his piece, were made with the band, Garbage’s, ‘To Die For’ film strips. Who on earth would have known, if I had not walked up to one narrator and bugged her? Just wait ’til yougoogle their works further. Names like: Tim Gutt, Tim Walker, Peter Lindbergh, etc. If your not familiar, they will open up new worlds for you for sure.

Quite a few school guided tours were conducted during my stay. Design school kids looked at the pieces and attentively and took notes. Quite a contrast to most of the other attendees, who used the exhibition as a backdrop for daily selfies and other social media fodder. Sigh.

All in all, an interesting event within a great space. Its refreshing to see a fashion installation with substance. With actual items to see and take in. Too many such events seem to rely on name, and hype, yet dissappoint with lack of newsworthy content. The sheer number of works here and the quality of artists gathered to produce them, is to be applauded in itself.

Perhaps next time the event will be typhoon 8 proof, as high fashion succumbed to the looming threat of the approaching, typhoon Usagi and the exhibition was terminated early. Next stop? To be determined, but worth catching if in a neighborhood near you.
